Gold and moss…

Shelf fungus have this amazing quality, when they are new and sunlit, of looking so damned rich. The gold isn’t metallic at all, and yet it glimmers like riches, and the mossy stripes add that impression of royal plushness. This doesn’t do it justice, but maybe if you’ve seen it in person, it will queue up the memory.

Shelf Fungus

This particular tree trunk is on my regular migratory route to the cafe, tucked in against a fence and not particularly impressive, especially since it’s near an archway that, come spring, will be covered in spectacular wisteria flowers. In the meantime that corner is sodden but still bravely churning out natural beauty: these golden curls of fungus and, beneath the tree, one singularly unphotogenic crocus bloom.

Eagle with attitude

Last Sunday Barb and I went to the Museum of Vancouver, and then scrambled around Vanier Park chasing the plentiful, cuddly and extremely friendly eagles, with the following result:

Eagle Vanier Park

I am even more appreciative of the bald eagles of Vancouver since going on a cruise to Alaska with a number of family members who don’t get to see them on such a regular basis. They are such powerful and charismatic birds. I also got another shot of “Eagles! Wow!” when we watched the salmon run episode of yet another winner of a BBC nature documentary, Nature’s Most Amazing Events. Slow-motion footage of eagles picking salmon out of the water, making it look easy, is just a tiny morsel of the stunning cinematography in this program. (Which is, like so many of the nature TV shows I love, narrated by Sir David Attenborough.)

Kingfisher in False Creek

Here’s that female belted Kingfisher I spotted in False Creek on my walk Friday.

Vancouver is in the depths of what passes for winter: long dark rainy days, with torrents of water and not much light. But it’s easy to think that’s all we get at this time of year, when in fact there are breaks in the clouds almost every day. I went dashing out of the house as soon as it lightened up on Friday, and this was my reward.
