Cats are keen! So is Peter Watts!

Once upon a time, I absorbed the following jingle from a Garfield cartoon:

Cats are keen, cats are great, cats are clean, they like your plate.

It’s not exactly Shakespeare, I know, but it can serve as an earworm if you haven’t heard any Madonna lately.

This week’s essay at Favorite Thing Ever was inspired by the memory of my dead cat Buddha, and all the other felines I have known and loved dearly. But since Canada’s true champion number one Cat Fan is the brilliant hard SF author Peter Watts, it is about him too.

Gold and moss…

Shelf fungus have this amazing quality, when they are new and sunlit, of looking so damned rich. The gold isn’t metallic at all, and yet it glimmers like riches, and the mossy stripes add that impression of royal plushness. This doesn’t do it justice, but maybe if you’ve seen it in person, it will queue up the memory.

This particular tree trunk is on my regular migratory route to the cafe, tucked in against a fence and not particularly impressive, especially since it’s near an archway that, come spring, will be covered in spectacular wisteria flowers. In the meantime that corner is sodden but still bravely churning out natural beauty: these golden curls of fungus and, beneath the tree, one singularly unphotogenic crocus bloom.

Folks have told me that my East Van lesbian werewolf romance, “The Cage,” made the Locus Recommended Reading list for 2010–I haven’t confirmed this with my eyeballs, but I hear that M.K. Hobson and Cat Rambo are on it too. Anyway, it was nice to hear and I want to cyber-hug all my friends and acquaintances who also made the list. (And, really, all my other friends and acquaintances too.)

In other news, Indigo Springs and “The Cage” are both available in an electronic bookstore called Diesel. I’m not sure how this works, formatwise, but they can be had. And they are both in the Sony Ebookstore now, too. iTunes is supposed to have them, but continues to lag behind.

It’s boggling, really, how many things have just become ours for the clicking.
